As we prepare for the Lenten season, I would like to open your mind to some new ideas and opportunities as we begin this season of growth in your faith and relationship with Christ. A central belief I want to revisit is the expectation that we do things for God. When we look at our relationship building as doing something for someone else, this cheats us out of one of the most beautiful things about our relationship with Christ. This transformational belief is that everything we do spiritually is actually for us.
We can acknowledge thatGod does not change. God is eternal love and that love never changes. It never diminishes, it never softens, and it never lessens. The opportunities for spiritual growth during this season or at any time are for our spiritual well-being. When you look at it as growth for us, not as an obligation for someone else, we free ourselves to work on a relationship that transforms us into God’s image, an image of unconditional and never ending love. When we look at these opportunities to reflect on Jesus, to spend time in prayer, to meditate on the Word, as chances to help us become better people, so we can relate to God better.
The Lenten journey is an opportunity to look at Jesus as He truly is: fully God and fully human. He went through so many struggles during his tenure with us. He left us with a legacy of faith, love and self-sacrifice. Taking advantage of this time to meditate and pray about the struggles Jesus endured will help us to not only apply these painful experiences to our lives, but to truly grow in our relationships to one another and to God with a compassionate heart and an empathic mind. Everything we do that makes us a more loving person, enables us to relate to our God better where we find true joy and happiness.
I encourage you all, as a family, to take the time this Lenten season to grow in your love for God and each other. Enter fully into this Lenten journey. As Catholics, we are blessed with so many traditions, traditions that give us the tools we need to grow in our love with our God. I hope we can use this time together to transform our hearts and minds, to grow together and fall deeper in love with our God.

RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS WEEK FEBRUARY 16th - 19th
Next week we honor St. Teresa of Calcutta as we intentionally practice random acts of kindness at school, home, and in the community. St. Teresa of Calcutta taught the world to see Christ in everyone we meet and to be kind to everyone. Throughout the week, students will learn about St. Mother Teresa’s spirit and selfless attitude as they participate in a kindness activity. We encourage everyone to participate in the following special dress days: Special Dress Days: Tuesday, February 16th - in honor of St. Teresa of Calcutta, wear a shirt that represents kindness, peace, or love (i.e. a Valentine’s Day shirt) with jeans and athletic shoes Thursday, February 18th - “Kindness is the St. Luke Way” day - wear a St. Luke spirit shirt with jeans and athletic shoes Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of God’s kindness; kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile. - St. Teresa of Calcutta
ASH WEDNESDAY MEAL – FEB. 17 2nd through 8th Grade
It is a long-standing tradition at St. Luke School for students in 2nd-8th grade to have a simple meal of soup, bread, and milk for lunch on Ash Wednesday. This is the only meal that the cafeteria will serve on Ash Wednesday. Students are asked to donate towards the cost of the meal; lunch cards will not be used for the Ash Wednesday lunch. The cafeteria donates the soup, bread and milk; the cafeteria staff donates their pay for the day. Students in Pre-K through 1st grade are asked to pack a sack lunch on Ash Wednesday. In an effort to minimize contact, payments will only be collected online. Please do not sent cash with students. Please follow this link for the online donation site. Donations will be accepted until 5:00 pm on Ash Wednesday. Thank you for your support and understanding.
