Early Childhood Developmental Milestones – Fine Motor Skills
Fine motor skills are the skills that develop through repeated exposure to specific tasks. They are less natural and require time to practice and develop. They also require focus, which helps with sustained concentration. Another positive attribute to developing fine motor skills is that sense of accomplishment, which feeds into the self-efficacy, which promotes self-confidence. Fine motor skills that need to be practiced are buttons and zippers, eating with utensils properly, coloring, manipulating clay or playdough, and many more. Our children need to do these tasks on their own; us doing these things for our children has an adverse effect on their development and hurts their self-esteem. Although the instinct may be there to do these things for our children, it actually works against healthy on track development. Let them do things on their own. Some ways to practice fine motor skills at home:
Cut strips of blue painters’ tape and allow them to do fun art on the walls using the tape
Practice right side from left
Write letters and numbers
Hold a pencil properly!!
Cut with scissors in a straight line, holding the scissors properly
Puzzles
Zippers, buttons, hooks
Draw a person with at least 8 body parts
Draw shapes
Help working in the garden, or yard
Practice cursive, or calligraphy
Sports practice with more precision
