I recently returned to San Antonio after a pilgrimage to Germany to see the passion play in Oberammergau. It was absolutely beautiful. The whole town participates in this extraordinary play every 10 years. I was blessed to be invited to attend as a coordinator. Although this meant I had to work on the trip, work never scared me. My job as coordinator was to take up the back of the line of pilgrims. We had 49 pilgrims join us on this excursion. I admit I was a bit irritated about being in the back of the line, as this pace is way too slow for what I am used to, but God calls us to do uncomfortable things sometimes to show us something or teach us a new way. Being in the back of the line made me slow down. The people in the back of the line all had reasons for being there, whether it was health reasons, pacing issues, or simply the type of person that likes to slow down and take it all in. Regardless of the reason, I was there to support them. Although it was not easy to slow down at first, as the days passed, I really enjoyed the slower pace. I also enjoyed offering my arm to someone who needed help walking, rolling a suitcase to ease someone’s burden, or simply call out, “The line is moving, move it!”. This opportunity allowed me to really care for the ones who needed support. I couldn’t help but compare this experience to the quote from Jesus, “The first shall be last in the Kingdom of God”. I guess it is not a matter of winning a race in the end, but of how we cared for others on the journey. If we are always so busy trying to run as fast as we can, we are missing out on the human elements of caring for our brothers and sisters in a transforming way. If we miss this lesson during our time on this planet, surely it is a necessary lesson to learn before we stand before our Maker. Our hearts are all bound by the love God has for all of us. That bound compels us to care for one another, to take the back of the line sometimes to support the ones in need. It may be physical support, or it may be emotional support. The world can change with love for one another, and our hearts will be better for it.

Red Ribbon Week 2022
The Red Ribbon became a symbol for drug prevention in 1985, in response to the murder of DEA Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena. Informed Families started the first county-wide Red Ribbon campaign in 1986. In 1988, the National Family Partnership (NFP) sponsored the first National Red Ribbon Week® celebration. Today, the Red Ribbon serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities. Since that time, the campaign has reached millions of U.S. children and families.
Students will participate in various activities during this week to maintain a positive outlook on life.
