Parents and caregivers can set their children up for distance learning to be successful by following the tips offered below by Common Sense Media.
Create a special, personalized corner of a room dedicated to learning, creating, and reading. Allow your child to help prepare the space for school, even if it only involves putting a decorated pencil box next to the device they’ll be using.
Create a visual schedule for younger children to follow. Older children will benefit from using a calendar, chalkboard, or digital organizer to keep track of what’s happening each day.
Have your child follow a routine as if they’re going to school (getting dressed, eating breakfast, brushing their teeth, etc.) This will help him/her to be mentally prepared for learning.
Be sure to build in breaks. If your child has difficulty maintaining attention, breaking their assignments into smaller parts can help them feel successful.
St Luke Class of 2017 Alumni Give Back
A group of Central Catholic seniors, who are St. Luke alumni from the Class of 2017, spent Saturday, Sept. 5, building 11 PVC pipe hand sanitizer dispenser stations for the middle school — providing a station for the 6th-8th grade homerooms and the specials classrooms (with a 12th station already built as a demo). The stations, which can be operated with a foot lever, deliver an inexpensive solution to providing students and faculty with “touch” free access to hand sanitizer. Thank you to the following Rebel alumni and their families: Jason Albor, Ian Doran, Chris Galvan, Roland Garcia, Esai Luna, James Nanthikattu, Diego Ramos, Adam Rodriguez, Enrique Rodriguez, Justin Rodriguez, and Nicholas Whelan. Thank you to the parents who funded this project and assisted the Central seniors with the build: Ann and Carl Albor, Tommie Galvan, Rosie Garcia, Deb and Ray Luna, Chris and Dipu Nanthikattu, Kari and Bill Ramos, Gaby and Enrique Rodriguez, Yolanda and Ernest Rodriguez, and Tracey and Charlie Whelan. A very special thank you to Charlie Whelan, Fiona (8th) and Moira (6th), who patiently oversaw and led the build and to Rebeka and Joseph Valencia, parents of Camilla (1st) and Sophia (3rd), for Joseph’s expertise and assistance on Saturday. Kyle Arndt, a St Luke class of 2019 alumnus, Central Catholic sophomore, and Life Scout of St Luke BSA Troop 405 will be leading a build as his Eagle Scout project to provide PVC hand sanitizer dispenser stations for the elementary classrooms and other areas as needed.
Pictured (left to right) with the PVC hand sanitizer dispensers are Central Catholic seniors and St. Luke Class of 2017 alumni Justin Rodriguez, Adam Rodriguez, Jason Albor, Nicholas Whelan, Enrique Rodriguez, Diego Ramos, and Ian Doran. Thank you and best wishes on your senior year. Once a Rebel, Always a Rebel.
