Dear St. Luke Families, I wanted to give you an update in light of rising Covid 19 cases in the San Antonio area. We are continuing to take the utmost care to make decisions that reflect the priority of safety for our children and families. I know the entire world is confused right now, but education is power. I wanted to take this opportunity to inform you about our procedures, so we are all on the same page. Unfortunately, we do not have a playbook for Corona Virus, so we are making decisions that will keep our community the safest. If we have a positive case on campus, we will call the families of the students in that homeroom, send out a letter to that class, and send a letter to the community. We do not share names with the community, and we are asking everyone to please allow our families to have privacy. We will let people know if they are directly affected, but we need to send our families positive vibes and not gossip. We are taking this route to ensure that everyone affected will know and you have the opportunity to ask questions. Knowledge is power, especially now in such unknown times. There is a whole line of investigation and discovery to get the full story about when and how someone was exposed. This is where trust comes into play. We have to trust each other, so we can continue to be safe while on campus. We will make decisions on the side of safety and caution, but this does not mean that just because you are in the same room with someone who is positive you are going to get it. We have safety precautions in place to ensure that we do not have spread, should someone be on campus that later tests positive. Again, we make decisions from a place of safety, due to the fact that there are so many unknowns about this virus. Due to the high positivity rate in Bexar County, we want to invite you to make your own decision about moving to distance learning. It is a very easy transition to keep your children at home. We will continue to offer onsite learning, but we want to ask you to please, keep your children home if you are engaging in high risk behaviors. This would include traveling in airplanes, being around people outside your immediate family without proper social distancing and masks, and knowing that you or your children were exposed to the virus. We ask that you continue to be vigilant to keep our campus safe. We thank you for your hard work and dedication to keep our school safe. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate through a brand new world. We appreciate your praise, suggestions, and comments. We continue to strive to bring the best Catholic education and experience for our community. Stay safe and smart, St. Luke Rebels. Nadine Buhrman COUNSELOR’S CORNER . . .
Helping Kids Cope During the Pandemic Holidays
We are all aware that the holidays this year will be different. Family members may not be able to celebrate together and new family traditions may have to be planned. Cumulative changes that we’ve been forced to endure throughout the pandemic can be quite disappointing and stressful for all, including children. While different, however, the pandemic holidays can still be celebrated in meaningful ways and without overwhelming stress. Assisting your kids in finding ways to reach out to others in kindness can help bring joy to the holidays. Also, including kids in the planning and decision-making by asking for their input and ideas will help minimize their disappointed feelings. Remember to acknowledge and validate any negative feelings your kids may have and model for them the positive coping skills that work for you. For additional information and suggestions for reducing stress, helping kids cope, and making new traditions during the holidays, please click on the article below.
St. Luke will be hosting a career day the morning of Friday, February 5, 2021 during Catholic Schools Week. We are excited to be offering this experience to our entire student body. We are extending an invitation to parents who would like to make this day as fulfilling as possible.
Parent volunteers are needed to talk to our Pre-K 4 - 8th grade students about career choices and the kind of steps that must be taken in order to gain access into chosen careers. This will be a wonderful opportunity for our students to be introduced to the variety of careers that are available in our job market, and it will help them to begin to develop a plan for future endorsement studies in high school. (Endorsements consist of a related series of courses that are grouped together by interest or skill set: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), Business and Industry, Public Service, Arts and Humanities, and Multidisciplinary Studies).
If you are interested in being a presenter, please email Mrs. Quintanilla and/or Mrs. Lopez at [email protected] and [email protected] and provide us with the following information: details about your career grade(s) you prefer to present to (early childhood, elementary, middle school)
Each speaker will give a 10-15-minute presentation via Zoom. Speakers will be provided with an outline to follow in preparing your presentation. Thank you for your support of our school’s efforts to teach and guide students toward successful career choices.
